A LONG LASTING HERITAGE
The conquest of Latin America was organised by those who wanted to recreate the feudal system of Medieval Europe. Conquerors received land and servants and the power of institutions like the Church was enormous.
The wars of independence didn't change that much; new rulers used old methods to secure their own interests.
With a long history of inequity and injustice, leftist groups got a huge support in the 60's and 70's in their struggle against dictatorships, which were many times supported by the US government.
The last 20 years saw the fall of the Soviet Union, less influence of the Church and a world, getting 'smaller' all the time: have things changed?

Peru, 2008:
Although economic growth has reached 'Asian levels' for years, over 50% of the population still live in poverty. One could use the term 'ethnic poverty'. Belonging to a certain ethnic class, almost automatically means belonging to a certain social class with a certain income level. Due to family problems, a bad education and ongoing discrimination things are unlikely to change.
