PEOPLE

Over 50% of the population still live in poverty. One could use the term 'ethnic poverty'. Belonging to a certain ethnic class, almost automatically means belonging to a certain social class with a certain income level.

Nine million of Peru’s 28 million inhabitants live in Lima. There you can find the largest differences. The most wealthy inhabitants, mostly from European origin, live in splendid villas, protected from the outside world by big walls with electric fences and security cameras. The slums are mostly inhabited by people who fled the country side because of poverty and violence. They live in huts of wood without water and electricity.

Cusco as well has different sides: ten minutes away from the rich, tourist center, you’ll find the same problems as in Lima. Even worse is the situation in the many indigenous communities outside the city.

Mundo Antiguo Tours helps poor communities with its' water project. We also facilitate volunteer work. Don’t you have the time for that, but are you interested in this issue? Follow our course ‘The Peruvian Society’ or visit a social project.
