WALKING TOUR: THE FORGOTTEN RUINS OF PUMA MARCA

? Questions and reservations

The ruins of Puma Marca are situated on about 2,5 hours walking from the Inca village of Ollantaytambo, one of the most popular destinies in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Many touring cars drive daily between Cusco and Ollantaytambo. Because of the beautiful ruins and because of the history – here the Spaniards suffered one of their few defeats in a direct confrontation with the Incas – but also because in Ollantaytambo many of the original Inca streets still exist.

Once outside the crowded tourist centre, you’ll find yourself immediately in another world. A world of tranquillity, ancient streets with houses built on Inca foundations, courtyards where chicha, corn beer, is being served and where chickens and guinea pigs walk around. After that: nature, small farms, splendid Inca terraces; the Andes as only few tourists will witness it.

Puma Marca is a fortress built on top of a steep slope, to control the entrance to the Sacred Valley from the nearby jungle. A steep climb will be rewarded with a beautiful panorama and the knowledge that you are visiting a place, known by only a few tourists.

Tip 1: Ollantaytambo is a particular nice village to stay for a while. Good idea? Reserve on time because the nicest hotels normally are booked up fast.

Tip 2: From Ollantaytambo you can take the train toward Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu. In general that’s cheaper and faster than taking a train from Cusco!
