MACHU PICCHU PLUS: BETWEEN TRAIL AND TRAIN
? Questions and reservations
Normally one goes or by train or with a hiking tour like the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. The first option is crowded by tourists, the second is heavy – and crowded… Did you know that there is yet another way to reach Machu Picchu? Maybe it’s just as adventurous as a hiking tour; only less heavy. And a lot more original than going by train! Our Machu Picchu Plus-adventureIn our Machu Picchu Plus-tour we drive to the village of Santa Teresa. From there we walk through the beautiful subtropical nature to an old coffee plantation. Here you’ll be offered a dinner of local products and you’ll get a lecture about the Incas, the conquest of their empire by the Spaniards and the mysterious history of Machu Picchu. We spend the night in the middle of the nature; in tents on the terrain of the hacienda. The next morning we visit optionally the natural hot springs of Colca Mayo. After that we hike toward Aguas Calientes, the village situated near Machu Picchu. We walk alongside a fast flowing river and subsequently over the rail road (that got destructed by the overflowing river and now doesn’t reach Santa Teresa anymore). A real wild west-feeling! Optional is a visit to the waterfall of Mandor (on a private terrain; S/. 10 entrance fee). We’ll stay for the night in a hotel in Aguas Calientes; you can choose between hotels in different price classes. The next morning breakfast is served at 5am, so that we can take one of the first busses to Machu Picchu (you can also walk, that will take you around 2 hours) to be there before most of the tourists. In Machu Picchu we can arrange a guide for a tour of about 2 hours (not included, about $ 40). After that you have plenty of time to explore the ‘Lost City of the Incas’ on your own, to maybe climb Wayna Picchu or the mountain Machu Picchu, or to hike a bit of the Inca Trail toward the Inti Punku, the Sun Gate. In the afternoon you’ll take the bus - or walk – to Aguas Calientes and from there you return by train to Cusco.
