MUNDO ANTIGUO TOURS - THE INCA TRAIL TO MACHU PICCHU

? Questions and reservations

The Inca Trail, probably - and with reason - worlds' most famous trail, leads over high mountains and trough upper rainforest to Machu Picchu. This trail formed part of an extensive network of trails named Qhapaq Ñan, about 23.000 kilometers throughout Tahuantinsuyo, the Inca-empire covering most of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Bolivia; and parts of Brazil, Chile and Argentina. Chasquis, special runners using these trails, could deliver messages from Quito to Cusco (a distance of 1980 kilometers) in 5 days!

The 2-days trail

We pick you up at your hotel and bring you to the train station in Cusco or Ollantaytambo, where you'll take the train to kilometer 104. There we start our hike (of in total about 6 to 7 hours) along the Inca Trail. We walk to the amazing ruins of Wiñaywayna, a beautiful Inca citadel at 2850 meters. In the afternoon, after our lunch, we hike down to Aguas Calientes where we stay for the night in a clean but basic guesthouse and have dinner.

The second day we enjoy a very early breakfast as we we'll take one of the first busses up to Machu Picchu, in order to be there before most of the tourists. After a 2-hour guided tour you have plenty of time to visit the 'Lost City of the Incas' on your own. In the afternoon we'll take the bus down to Aguas Calientes and from here we travel again to Cusco.

Reservation advice

Please keep in mind that you have to reserve the Inca Trail (both 2 or 4 days) a long time in advance, because of strict entrance regulations. To protect the ecosystem along the trail, Peruvian government only allows 500 persons per day (including porters and guides) to enter. We advice you to reserve the trail at least 4 months in advance, but preferably just as soon as possible!

In order to reserve both the 4 and 2-days Inca Trail we need the following:
- Full name as it is written in your passport
- Passport number
- Nationality
- Date of birth
- Departure date for the trail
- 40% deposit at Western Union, the rest you can pay at our Cusco office
- copy/fax or scan from both sides of your ISIC student card (people under 28 with the official card get a $ 35 discount)

NOTE: Because of very strict regulations the passport number you send us has to be the same as the number on the passport with which you enter the Inca Trail. Please inform us if you have to get a new passport in the meanwhile. Bring a colour copy of your old passport; if you don't have one the INC and our operator charge $ 25 administration costs.
Permits are strictly personal because of the same regulations: it's not possible to change dates or give you permit to another person once we bought your permit and confirmed your reservations (even if you're sick for example) .
