4000 YEARS OF CIVILIZATION
Those who think of pre-Colombian Peru think of the Incas. Although their culture was indeed highly developed and covered an enormous area, the Inca only were the last out of many flourishing civilizations in Peru. Starting as long ago as 2500 BC this part of South America has seen many civilizations, which finally culminated in the Inca. Though less is known, and without written records its history still subject to debate, a comparison between the Peruvian and the Egyptian or Mediterranean cultures can be made.

After a general overview of Peru's long history we have a closer look to four civilisations that left a heritage you'll be likely to visit. Both the Moche as the Nazca lived during the so-called Classic Period, around 100 to 700 AD. They left astonishing pottery and sites that you should visit. The discovery of a series of tombs in Sipán in 1987 was considered the most important archaeological discovery in America in decades, while the Nazca Lines are the most famous heritage of the Nazca.
The Chimú-culture was conquered by the Inca. Its enormous adobe city of Chan Chan, worlds biggest mud city, was still one of the most important population centres of the Incas when the Spaniards arrived in Peru.
